If you want a good belly laugh check out one of the episodes of ‘The Girl’s Next Door’ when Hugh Hefner is out at a nightclub dancing with some of his girlfriends, bunnies, playmates et al. Good God, this guy puts out less effort at his dancing then most men. Granted, old Hugh walks with a bent over shuffle now so just standing upright is pretty good for him, but I saw film clips of his dancing from decades earlier and he wasn’t much better. Even back then he did the Junior High side to side foot drag with truncated arm swing.

Well, Why should he put any effort into it? He knows for a fact that he’s going to get lucky that night, so why work at it? He needs to save his energy. Not so for the rest of us guys. We only have crossed fingers that our work will pay off and that’s not much to go on. Let me you into a secret here: No straight man really likes dancing so much. It’s all for the ladies and almost always the last thing in the world we’d ever want to do.

The last time I was ever on a dance floor it was because I was dragged out there. The times have been few indeed where I actually asked somebody to dance with me.

It seems to be different for women. They dance because it’s an activity they want to engage in for it’s own sake, much like taking a hot bath. Can someone explain that to me? I’ve asked women what on Earth is so great about laying in hot water and all I ever get is vague evasions as if it weren’t the bath itself but something else, something else they were doing in that hot bath all alone by themselves without their clothes on … hey, wait a minute!

Okay, now I get it.

After many years, I’ve finally figured out a way not to disgrace myself so thoroughly on the dance floor. I call it faux dancing. Here’s how it works: When I must dance I try to equip myself with some distractors, these are distractors to distract my partner from how crappy I’m dancing. My two favorite distractors used to be to have a drink in one hand and a cigarette in the other. Thus, every time I would miss a step I would take a sip off my cocktail, another misstep - a puff on my cigarette, a really bad one: Sip and a puff both. Then to further distract my partner I would lean in and make some sort of conversation.

Of course, I would have to make some sorts of motions with my body so my ploy was to sort of kind of mirror my partner - figuring she probably knows how to dance - and sort of kind of mirroring her makes it look like I do, too. When she would twirl under my outstretched arm, I knew I was home free.

Back to Hugh. The guy’s got a pretty good life now. I wonder to myself whether I would change places with him and take over his life, if I suddenly had to be an eighty year old man but with free hot sex with pretty much as many beautiful women as me and my viagra could handle. That’s a hard hypothetical question, for sure. But you know what? If I live long enough I will be an eighty year old man and I probably won’t be having hot blondes sharing my bed then. So all things considered if I could suddenly assume Hugh Hefner’s life right now I’d do it, even if I didn’t dance so hot.

For some reason my letters, phone calls and E-mails requesting an invitation to the Playboy Mansion go unheeded. Unheeded if you don’t count restraining orders - and I don’t. By the way, even though I hold the patent on faux dancing any other man who wants to can use it. It’s worked pretty good for me and it probably will for you, too.

I’ve never thought of myself as a brave man, but it’s nice to know if you’ll be able to handle yourself in a dangerous situation. One morning on my drive to work such an occasion occurred. I was cruising down the road and singing off-key to the radio when I suddenly had the gut wrenching feeling that I wasn’t alone. I could sense the presence of evil even before I saw the black, beady eyes and the long, fang-like teeth that would have chilled the blood of a navy seal.

I swerved the car like a madman, not caring about my own well-being or the safety of others as I tried to disgorge from my car this demonic creature from the depths of hell. But the brute held on! Clinging to my wiper blades like a trapeze artist was a mouse. And I’m not talking Mickey Mouse here, this mouse was mean, evil and cunning. I could see it in his eyes.

Once I’d gotten over my initial panic I knew I had nothing to fear. I had the superior mind. Besides, he was on the outside while I was safe, entombed within a metal fortress. I locked the doors and prepared to do battle.

If I couldn’t shake him off, perhaps I could flood him out. My fingers wrapped around the control to the window washer and I chuckled softly to myself, knowing that this mouse had met his match. I plunged the button down and water cascaded over him in a furious waterfall while I laughed the laugh of the victorious.

But then the creature lifted first one leg and then the other, and I swear he slowly washed under each armpit. Then, with a final twist of his tail, which I knew in rodent language had to be an obscene gesture, he slithered under the hood and out of sight.

My morning at work passed slowly as I waited for lunch to arrive so I could continue my bout with the creature. Armed with an ice scrapper and an umbrella, I popped the hood and prepared to do battle. The cowardly beast had fled. In his haste he had left behind a scattering of acorn shells, leaves and pine needles. I took great pleasure in brushing his meager possessions off of my engine and onto the cold, dark pavement. This rodent hotel was closed. We both knew who had the superior mind - until I got home that night and cast a final glance at the battlefield, that space between the hood and windshield where the wipers come to rest. There, staring up at me with demonic lust, were those black, beady eyes.

We both knew he was looking for a fight. For him, it would be revenge; for me, vindication. Showing absolutely no concern for my own safety, I grabbed my weapons of choice, my trusty ice scrapper and umbrella, threw open the hood and prepared to confront the monstrous beast.

Oh, how that ninja mouse led me on a merry chase! Jumping and scrambling from engine part to engine part, the cowardly fiend was afraid to stand still and fight me like a man. Meanwhile, I followed always a second behind, banging from air filter to carburetor, my weapons a blur of angry motion. I worked myself up into a frenzy and couldn’t have banged any faster had I been playing a drum solo in a rock concert. In desperation, the beast dove down a small crevice and disappeared into the bowels of my car.

A lesser man might have gloated over his victory, but I had a more important task before me. In a total disregard for the Geneva Convention’s ban on chemical warfare, I forced mothballs into every crack and opening I could find. I crammed five pieces down the crevice into which the coward had fled.

It’s been two days now and there has been no further sign of the evil beast. He has met his match and instinct has taken him to haunt a new location. I was free of the rodent, the only reminder the pungent smell of mothballs every time I turned on the heater. I didn’t mind, it was the smell of victory.

This morning the little boy who lives next door came by to visit. He was sad. It seems that a couple of days ago his pet gerbil got loose and ran away.

We all watch the commercials on TV. We hear them on the radio. We meet someone at an event or hear them speak and we are hooked. What has happened? Their marketing efforts have made the ordinary sound extraordinary. They have been successful at essentially creating something out of nothing! This is marketing at its best!

How can we, as entrepreneurial women, market ourselves and our businesses most effectively? First we need to clarify what we want to gain as a result of our marketing efforts. Once we have identified those goals, then we can go back and put our plan together which will tell us HOW to market ourselves most effectively.

What we want to gain as a result of our marketing might be:

-To increase the number of potential clients who know about us.

-To increase the number of potential clients who not only have heard of us, but who understand why they need our products. (explain the ways that your products or services will benefit them)

-To increase the number of potential clients to take action and contact us to buy our products or services.

Some entrepreneurs still think it works exactly like that. However, they are mistaken. Yes, we want our prospects to hear about us, know that we have the perfect product or solution for them which will entice them to come to us to buy. But it doesn’t necessarily happen so easily today.

The business landscape has changed due to two very specific changes in our current marketplace.

1- The number of competitor entrepreneurs is constantly rising (consumers have more choices in just about every industry) and 2- The abundance of information (due to the internet and similar venues) bombarding people with everything they’ve always (or even never) wanted to know about tends to be overwhelming and confusing.

Because of these changes, successful businesspeople have to be aware of the newest ways to thrive, not just survive in today’s marketplace. To thrive in today’s marketplace, no matter your industry, you must make every effort to position yourself and your company to be “top of mind” with as many potential AND current clients as possible. The onus is on you to ensure that when your potential or current client is ready to buy your product or service they think of YOU first. Do you see how that is a different mindset from the “old days” where the focus was on putting a good product or service out there, knowing that you would essentially have clients come to you for them? Today it just doesn’t work that way.

Put simply, our potential clients are being bombarded with LOTS of information and offers. In order to secure them as clients, they need YOU to come out as the preferred vendor or the person they will choose to hire or buy from. This happens only after you have “proven” yourself in it for the long haul. With so many choices, the average person needs time to sort through the information and decide who is “for real” and who has the best product or service. It is up to you to market and position yourself as the most credible, trustworthy expert in your industry. The responsibility for keeping your name in front of them until the time they are ready to move forward, remains totally with you as business owner. The latest research shows that the average person will not act on something until they see or hear it a minimum of 7-9 times, even if they need or want it. How can you make sure that you are the one who the client chooses to do business with?

1- Focus on building relationships

This brings us to the next important change to the way successful entrepreneurs market themselves for the purpose of securing business. We need to be focusing on the relationships we are creating with both our current and potential clients to ensure long term success. We have all heard of the importance of CRM or customer relationship marketing, right? This is where we, as business owners, focus on how we interact with each customer in an effort to solidify our long term relationship with them. We know that people do business with people they like. So it behooves us to take the extra step to show that we truly care about our clients by asking them questions about themselves, their families, their businesses. And from that information send birthday and anniversary cards, surprise them by sharing an article pertinent to one of their interests, touch base with them regularly via phone, notes, email, newsletter, and an in-person meeting regularly. Does this take work? You bet! But, the rewards of loyal, repeat clients will be more than worth your effort.

Relationships are forged one opportunity at a time. They can be solidified in person most effectively, but certainly can also be done via notes, emails, and phone calls when your clients are across the continent or around the globe. Get out and meet new people on a regular basis. Get to know them by showing genuine interest in them and ask questions. Then proudly and confidently share with them what you do (your solution). Then follow up with them and thank them for their time. Send them your newsletter each month. Spend time nurturing your relationships.

2- Focus on a niche

DIFFERENTIATING yourself is key in this area! Most business owners think that the more products or services, they offer, the higher their chances of being successful, when actually the opposite is true. Those who specialize in a niche market– zeroing in on the needs of a certain niche in the marketplace end up being most successful.

The goal is to find your niche (identify a group of people whom share similar characteristics that you would like to serve with your products or services), narrow it down as far as possible and then hit it with all you’ve got. The narrower your market the broader your chances of success in this hypercompetitive, over-communicated to society. In short, specialization or niche marketing implies superiority. Niche marketing is the wave of the future! The greater the competition, the greater the need for specialists. What will YOUR specialization or niche be? Where are they? Make sure you show up there. What do they read? Be sure to write an article for that publication. Become so entrenched in serving your niche, that you are clearly seen as the expert and thus, the person your prospects trust and do business with.

3- Become an expert!

Consumers (whether businesses or personal) want to minimize any mistakes. So they will trust and eventually do business with those professionals who are seen as the expert in their chosen field. You should make it your main purpose to position yourself and be an expert. You do this by reading, researching and investigating various aspects of your industry. This work will give you the valuable information you need to take your new found expert status to the next level. Once you have enough foundational information related to your product or service, you need to be writing articles, speaking at events attended by your niche, and continually getting your name out there in the marketplace as an expert. Ask yourself, “What free report(s) could I create and make available to my prospects?” “What information related to your product or service are your prospects wondering about?” “What could you research and provide to them that they would appreciate?” Share your industry knowledge and expertise with others. It is probably one of the most successful ways to be seen as an expert and inevitably be the one chosen to do business with.

Can all of this be done overnight? Certainly not. However, taking small steps on a daily basis will get you closer to your marketing yourself to a thriving business full of clients who are all too happy to tell others about you.

As the price of home heating oil, natural gas, electricity and other forms of energy continue to climb, many concerned people are hoping for divine intervention. Some homeowners however are exploring the installation of the solar power equipment that will allow them to harness the power of the sun to provide energy for their homes.

When energy prices were low, it was unnecessary to justify the upfront cost of cash required to install photovoltaic equipment, solar water heaters and similar equipment. {August 20, 2008}   The Market for Gaming Laptops Has Become a Saturated One

Not so long a go it appeared like gaming laptops were only procurable from certain brands and they were normally custom built. Even though they did not sell a great amount they still produced the most in comparison to other types of notebook. These popular notebooks were just too expensive. Had you been a power hungry user they were basically the best laptops you could buy. Despite the fact that was true I believe the prices were so high that we would buy laptop computers that were not so powerful instead. The primary manufacturers have recently begun taking advantage of massive opportunities in gaming laptops, so that is all altering.

Lowering prices are not common is this sector so global manufacturers can be scooping a lot of cash. These companies have probably been losing some money on standard systems so this should be an attractive opportunity. I am pretty confident that people would buy laptops if marketed to everybody by these global companies. Had I been a smaller reseller I would definitely be thinking of plans to react to this kind of competition. I believe once it becomes mass marketed it will not have the same appeal. Clearly the value of a familiar brand name comes into use here.

The notebooks are surprisingly really good too. In my view however, this is in fact a ray of hope for the local players in retail. On occasions the littler system builders can provide the newest components quicker and so provide faster specs too. These buyers have the technical know how and could conclude which products are best. For certain purchasers, the tech specs and performance may be way more important than style.

This can be pretty beneficial from the prospects view. I can predict a couple of price wars taking place in this sector later on. I am not really sure any of that will happen however. I guess technology is getting more better but the new laptops will normally remain highly priced. We will find out what we can expect from the gaming notebook markets large players.
