Michael Brewer, an employee of Dura Automotive Body and Glass Systems, received serious injuries from a fully automatic industrial robot when he was trying to repair it. His voice box has been damaged and one side of his body is paralyzed. He has been confined to bed ever since.

On May 6, 2008, Mr. Brewer wanted to fix this malfunctioning robot. In order to do so he needed to have a close look at the operating cycle of the robot while it was working. But the view was obstructed by the solid guard that covered the whole robot. The accident took place when he moved dangerously close to it and received an unexpected blow in his throat from the robot.

An investigation by HSE, revealed some serious lapses on the security arrangements of the company. It failed to assess the risk potential involved with view of the operating cycle. Besides, one of the preconditions of accessing the machine was to put it in manual mode. But due to poor supervision it was not ensured when Mr. Brewer approached the machine. The HSE investigation also found that the viewing the machine from the protected area was quite common but yet no step was taken to ensure its safety.

Birmingham Crown court, after hearing the case of Mr. Brewer directed this Castle Bromwich-based company in the UK to pay a fine of £30,000 and another £20,000 towards the expenses.

On 6 April this year, a number of alterations were made by the Dept of Work and Pensions targeted at helping adult females, carers and small wage earners in retirement, but it was not great news for everyone.

One of the most significant changes is the inflated nominal age for drawing a retirement pension. From 6th April, the nominal pension age rose to age fifty five, hitting more than four million individuals who were born between 6 April nineteen fifty five and the fifth April nineteen sixty who unfortunately have to hold back for up to 5 yr to take their pension.
