{May 23, 2008}   Homemade Christmas Gifts

Buying gifts for the holidays has become more of a chore than an expression of love and joy. Products that we purchase generally come right off the assembly line with little thought involved. We may give someone a gift that they already have - or a gift that someone else is giving as well. It’s time to go back to the old days when people made gifts to give at Christmas time. A homemade gift truly exemplifies the spirit of Christmas and shows how much you care.

Think about what you like to do in the way of hobbies. Is baking your forte? If so, bake to your heart’s content; put your goods in a gift-wrapped box, and you have a wonderful gift sure to please its recipients. If you like to knit, hats, scarves, slippers, etc. all make fabulous gifts. If you find it hard to be creative, there are kits that you can purchase giving step-by-step instructions to create a homemade piece. They include candles, pottery, stained glass ornaments, embroidery and scented soaps. Perhaps woodworking is your hobby. Who wouldn’t appreciate a homemade hat rack, knick- knack shelf or bookcase?

Let your children be creative as well. There are hundreds of homemade gifts they can create as gifts for the holidays. For older children, potholder kits, beads and paint-by-numbers are fun and easy to do. For younger children, a framed drawing using finger paint or crayons is truly a special gift.

Keep the true meaning of giving during the holidays alive and well. This Christmas make your gifts - you can bet they will be cherished throughout the coming years.

Real estate investors and home buyers want to purchase homes in
York County because the nearly 200 miles of coastline along the
York River and its tributaries offers a desirable waterside
lifestyle, the county’s population is actively involved in the
community, the school district has an excellent reputation, and
real estate taxes are low. York County Virginia is bounded by
Williamsburg, Newport News, and James City County to the north
and west, Hampton to the south, and the York River to the east.
This means homeowners or home buyers in this area are centrally
located, and can commute nearly anywhere on the Peninsula with
ease. The Colonial Parkway, part of Colonial National Park, runs
through York County and connects the James River to the York
River. This 30 minute wooded drive along both rivers. links
Historic Jamestowne in Williamsburg to the battlefields of
Yorktown. The strong economy of York County is bolstered by the
Yorktown Naval Weapons Station and a Coast Guard station, both
which remain in operation even after numerous base closings
nationwide Riverwalk Landing in Yorktown Residents and visitors
to York County can now spend time relaxing along the riverfront
at Riverwalk Landing in Yorktown, a newly renovated retail
development and a park along the York River. Riverwalk Landing
combines colonial style architecture with an eclectic mix of
shops, a widened beach area, several restaurants, a performance
area, a two-tier parking garage with ample space, and two docks
- one that supports cruise and tall ships and another for
smaller personal watercraft. The locally famous Nick’s
Restaurant, an elegant seafood restaurant owned by a generous
Greek family who gifted some land to Yorktown, at one time
overlooked the York River nearby. Though Nick’s is gone, part of
the staff and manager continue the tradition of serving fine
food at the Duke of York Motor Hotel in Yorktown, in the River
Room. The restaurant still overlooks the waterfront, and has the
same quality and price of fare as the old Nick’s ($18.95-$35 per
entrée).

Rezoned Northern Sectors of York County Walmart and Lowe’s
recently opened new stores in northern York County, near the
borders of James City County and Williamsburg, who both declined
their offers to build. This has paved the way for rezoning part
of the surrounding area as commercial property. On the other
side of of the county, near Water Country U.S.A., a new 600,000
square foot upscale open-air shopping center, called
“Williamsburg Row” will house retail shops, restaurants, offices
and entertainment. Future plans call for a movie theater in
phase 2, but the actual scale of the development is still being
debated as of September 2005, because it is nearby three
historic sites. Premiere Properties of Indiana will undoubtedly
build this upscale commercial property in some form or fashion
and it will be open for business in several years. Read the
article in the Virginia Gazette for more information

y. All of this activity in York County bodes well for homebuyers
and home investors who purchase now, because home prices are
likely to increase as the area becomes even more popular. School
Districts Parents request homes in the York County School
district, and it lives up to its reputation. York County Schools
provide excellent athletic and academic programs. York County
Elementary Schools rank in the top 10% of elementary schools in
Virginia, according to figures from 2005. Grafton High School is
a brand new high school, and the newest of the York County High
Schools.

Water Country U.S.A. Water Country U.S.A., a nationally known
theme park with state of the art water rides for children and
adults is located in York County, near Williamsburg. For
homeowners or potential homebuyers in York County who may want
to take their children to Water Country U.S.A. on a regular
basis a seasonal passport ticket is available at a greatly
reduced rate.

Presidents Park The famed Presidents Park, showcases the busts
of 43 larger than life presidents and tells the story of Early
American history from the settlement of Jamestowne in 1607
forward. Presidents Park is an educational and fun exploration
of history, and is located right in York County. The museum
building on site houses classrooms, meeting rooms, a gift shop,
café, and banquet room.

When relocating to places like York County, parents will want
to consider the effect on their children’s lives and education.
York County is actually a wonderful location for a family to
purchase a home because of all of the family friendly
activities. If you prefer nearby Williamsburg, James City
County, or New Kent County, read some other articles I’ve

{May 19, 2008}   Hyatt Grand Champions Resort in Indian Wells

What do you do to relax after the Christmas holidays and right before the New Year? You go to the Coachella Valley (Palm Springs, Indian Wells, Palm Desert,…), find a nice resort and let your worries be gone … The perfect place is the Hyatt Grand Champions Resort in Indian Wells. At the entrance you are greeted by tall palms, a nice fountain and smiling doormen. Throughout our stay, the staff was very pleasant (borderline too pleasant) and attended to all our needs. The concierge staff provided correct information with a sincere smile.

Our room faced the pool area and had a view of the snowcapped San Jacinto mountain. This was a sight to be seen. Room was well equipped and furnished amiably. The bed was comfortable. The spacious bathroom included a separate bath tub and standing shower. My aching back welcomed the massage shower head.

The grounds of the hotel are divided into several areas. The pool courtyard has multiple areas, some for families and some just for adults. There is a spa within the grounds which looks very inviting though I did not use any of these services. The hotel lies adjacent to two golf courses more notably known as the Gold Resort at Indian Wells. It looks a bit decadent to be in the middle of the desert and see such a large perfectly green grassy area …

The stay was great and I would definitely return. On other travel web sites people seem to have leaned more towards the Esmeralda Resort in Indian Wells. After spending time at both my preference is definitely the Hyatt Grand Champions Resort … note: Hotels are adjacent to each other and share the same golf course. Esmeralda has a more generic “hotel-ly” architecture …

P.S.
Any bad things? .. yes … The cleaning services misplaced my favorite white sleeping shirt after the first night at the resort. They said that they would inquire about it, but I have a feeling that they did not do much in that sense. It is the first time that something has gone missing from a hotel I have stayed at so I was not happy …

{May 16, 2008}   Hotels aren’t the only place you can stay on vacation!!!

Today, we as travelers have a ton of options to consider. Where to go, how to get there,
where to stay, what to take, how to plan, where to find deals…
You get the point.
Well, this article is to introduce you to options on where to stay other than a hotel.

Hotels are a great option. They can be just what you need for your trip, especially if it’s just two of you. You can go with big chains that are well trusted or small chains that may take some digging to ensure you get a nice, clean, affordable hotel room with everything you need. However, if you travel with a number of people or as a family, a hotel room can get cramped, lack privacy, and get expensive when you upgrade to suites and add extra amenities (like a kitchenette).

Hotels though are great because it is easy to find a lot of good deals with all the viable travel sites out there.

But, you do have other options….

**How about a condo? Condos are great, and in some destinations the main option. Condos can be small or big. They offer added space, extra amenities, prime locations, and at prices that are comparable to hotel rooms.

For example, we stayed in a quaint (small) condo in Miami. We rented it for only $400 for the week. It was perfect for my wife and I. The beds pulled down out of the wall, we had a very very clean room, private entrance to the place and beaches, quiet area, 2 pools, a kitchen with equipment, a nice bathroom, cable, and gorgeous view of the Atlantic. It was our “love shack” for the week and much cheaper by almost $200 than any hotel in the area.

**Rent a home. These are now great with the way real estate is nowadays. If you are traveling with a large group, then this may be your best choice. Get everything you need or live like luxury in a beachfront home for your vacation.

Once, 18 of our family members went to Florida and had to rent a home. It was not on the Ocean, but on a bay. It was perfect. It had 3 levels, a hot tub, pool, 4-5 bedrooms, plenty of room, amenities, and lots of fun. We had a great time together since everyone lives in different parts of the country. It was very affordable once split up 4 ways also.

**Resorts and All-inclusive. This is an excellent option for families or if you don’t want to worry about reaching into your pocket. All-inclusive seems to be diminishing in the US, but you can find it abroad and is typically the best choice. Resorts are great for those who want to spend quality time together, get plenty of privacy and space, and enjoy various activities like golf, fishing, things for the kids, spas, etc…

**Time Shares. These are growing tremendously in the traveling world. Time-shares are great if you use them. You pay a fee upfront and once a year to utilize a time-share. There are various types, so you would want to do your research. Buying a time-share is similar to buying a home in that you don’t want to take the decision lightly.

My wife’s parents have one and love it. They can go anywhere they want as long as they stay in the designated places. We used theirs for our honeymoon in Palm Beach, Florida. It was first-class all the way.

If you and your family travel at least once a year, consider looking into a time-share.

**Camping and RV parks. With the way campgrounds and RV parks are set up nowadays, the term “rough it” doesn’t exactly come to mind. You can get almost everything at a campground that you’d get in a hotel. They are cheap, live out in nature for a week, and have a great time. There are a few things to consider if you are a novice to camping, so you’ll want to do some homework before you decide on this as an option.

**Houseboats. Live on the water for your trip. This is, yet another option to choose from. My aunt has lived on a houseboat in Florida for years and loves it. This is something many don’t even think of, but look into it, you may not go back to staying on land for any future trips.

We hope this article has helped shed some light on where you might stay on your vacations. Villas, Cabins, and other type choices should be considered for specific destinations and vacations.

Most importantly, have fun, find great deals, and enjoy your trip!!
